A tailored aged care security risk assessment of a residential facility gave management prioritised, proportionate recommendations to protect residents, staff and visitors while supporting aged care standards and duty of care obligations.
THE CHALLENGE
A residential aged care provider operates a community-facing facility that welcomes families, visitors and contractors every day. Its residents are among the most vulnerable people in the community, and its staff and visitors also need to feel safe. Management wanted an independent view of whether the existing security arrangements were adequate for this environment. That meant looking at physical infrastructure, access controls, surveillance systems and incident response, and at how well these supported the provider’s obligations under the aged care quality standards and its duty of care. Any recommendations needed to be proportionate, so that the facility could remain a welcoming home rather than feel like a secure institution.
OUR APPROACH
Agilient carried out a security risk assessment using a structured methodology based on ISO 31000 and HB 167. Consultants inspected the facility, reviewed its physical infrastructure, access control arrangements, surveillance systems and incident response protocols, and consulted staff to understand how the facility operates day to day and where they felt exposed. Risk scenarios specific to the aged care environment were then analysed, taking into account the vulnerability of residents, the open nature of the site and the need for staff to respond quickly and safely. Each risk was assessed against existing controls, and treatment options were developed with proportionality in mind, favouring practical measures that reduce risk without changing the character of the home. The findings were documented in a risk assessment report tailored to the provider’s operational needs.
